ramboRambo the movie was released today. I remember the older rambo movies when I was a child and my older brother more than I. With the large lineage that Sylvester Stallon has left (rocky, rambo ect) across multiple different generations its very interesting that the marketing team for Rambo chose break.com to host their theatrical trailer.

When I noticed this strange choice a few things started going through my head. Why Break.com, why not youtube? My next logical conclusion was the fact that it must be something about the demographics on break.com. Some things that we need to know about youtube is that the demographics are very distributed. Not only are they varied in age but also location. Asia is a big traffic source for youtube! Also youtube has limitations on customization of channels.

Break.com does have the exact target demographic needed for a successful launch of the new Rambo. 10-34 year olds ready to be re-introduced to the epic that is Rambo. The advertising and cinematragraphy is geared towards a the younger generation and has given the older watchers something to get excited for. As Sylvester Stallon gets its important as a marketer to make him relevant. Breaks gets most of its traffic from the united states which works well becaue the largest area that Rambo was released in on the 25th of January is the United States.

Break.com has not released anything official nor has Rambo from the research I have done. However there seems to be some kind of synergy between both entities. I see a bigger benefit for Break.com honestly then I do for Rambo however the target demo and the percentage of dedicated and returning users to break is very appealing its not the best site to release this on.

According to competes new tool that shows what keywords are driving most traffic to a site the term “rambo” is now in the top 3 keywords for break.com. You can see that break.com now ranks in the golden trial for the term “rambo” as well.

Whats even more interesting is the geographic traffic that comes into break compared to the traffic from other countries who search for the term “rambo”. As you can see here the amount of traffic from other countries into break is pretty small. Now if you check out the Google trends for the term “rambo” you can see that the majority of this search term is done in Fineland, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Italy, United Kingdom, Spain and Brazil which are some of the secondary largest traffic sources for break.com according to Quantcast.

This was intelligent marketing by both parties and I expect to see a higher number of users from these countries for break.com directly from this marketing campaign. I also predict that Rambo is going to do very well not only in the U.S. but in other countries as well especially if the marketers keep making smart marketing decisions like this one.

Just to note, the term “rambo” is present when you do foriegn searches. See below:

  1. Good business case. I think grab all social communities are teaching us a lot about what works, and what doesn’t. Everything specializes over time, as niche interests become known and substantial. It’s an efficient division of demand. The lack of much of an identity of YouTube is partly what has been unappealing about it for me. I want something specific and with credibility, like - sports highlight videos presented by sports highlight fans for sports highlight fans. YouTube is everything provided by everyone for everyone. Break is somewhere in between, but a step in the right direction.

  3. Good point Simon. The trend for social is certainly going niche. Something interesting about break is when I submit a video to youtube and the same one to break I get sometimes more traffic to the video on break alone. When I do video syndication I see that I get a lot of hits from break and youtube and dailymotion… the others.. not so much. Its interesting how the users on these sites are addicts and get very involved. Thats how sites become popular. I expect big things from break.
