Another evening has past and I had the great pleasure of seeing another great advertisement by Ask.com. I admit that each commercial is put together very well however as a searcher I am still unimpressed because the results they pull are still not as acurate as I would like. I don’t care about bells and whistles and I think the majority of searchers want to see information fast and relevantly delivered. After I saw this commercial I got curious and did some digging.

Ask.com started doing these commercials a ways back and I wanted to see what their efforts have pulled for them. I first went to alexa.com and this is what I found.

ask.com graph

Over the course of 5 years the numbers on ask.com or previously known as askjeeves.com have been steadily declining. The recent commercials look like they have helped breath some life back into ask according to this graph but I wanted to see what the other search engines looked like in comparison to ask.com. Here is what I found.

all search engines graph

The blue line at the bottom of this graph represents ask.com. The other search engines are realistically where they should be on this graph. They are the major players in american search. However some might look at this and say “hey, if google is so popular why are the other search engines trafficked just as much as google?” Thats a great question and easily explained.

As many marketers know, Google has never openly promoted a portal service like Yahoo! and MSN until recently with iGoogle which has taken its time to reach maturity. The other engines offer much much more in their portal then Google which accounts for the number of visitors to the actual domain. However, below is an accurate representation to the number of searches and search share each engine has received over August and September of 2007.
