Todays mobile search interview is with Jaan Kanellis over at KBK marketing. We talk about mobile search, its future and some real world examples.
Joe: Hey Jaan, Can you tell my readers a little about yourself just in case they are not familiar with you and your work.
Jaan Kanellis: I am the founder of KBKMarketing.com, which provides organic and PPC website marketing to clients, agency partners and SEM companies. Jaan has been involved in online marketing since 1999.
Jaan has current and past client relationships including Kelkoo.co.uk, Yahoo.co.uk, FramesDirect.com, ADMWorld.com in which he has developed and meet search marketing goals for top tier search engines like Google, MSN and Yahoo.
Jaan authors his own Search Marketing blog at JaanKanellis.com. He is a also a moderator at WebProWorld.com and regularly contributes to most search engines forums including HighRankings.com. You can find Jaan under most search engine marketing forums under the handle “incrediblehelpâ€. Jaan has written many search engine articles syndicated by SearchEngineGuide, WebProNews, WebDesign.org and many more.
Joe: What kind of phone do you have?
Jaan: Right now I am using a basic Motorola Razor with VCast. Nothing to special, but serves my needs fine. I am already on the computer to many hours of the day, so a blackberry just isn’t right for me right now.
Joe: When you are performing mobile search what do you normally search for?
Jaan: I do perform mobile search and mostly search for restaurants.
Joe: Do you see any of your clients looking for any type of mobile search optimization? For the clients that do look for mobile search optimization what sets your approach apart from your competitors?
Jaan: None of my clients are looking for optimization for mobile search yet.
Joe: In your opinion, how can mobile search help the smaller companies.
Jaan: The mobile search market is largely untapped. As mobile search grows mom and pop shops that once ruled the organic listing on Google in the past, can now be back on top with little optimization on mobile devices.
Joe: What opportunities do you see for American companies to utilize mobile foreign search? How would you implement a foreign mobile search campaign and measure success?
Jaan: That would depend if the client has interests in foreign sales or traffic. Right now I have yet to attempt a foreign search campaign.
Joe: What are some of the hurdles you see mobile search facing today and what will it take to overcome these hurdles?
Jaan: Mobile search is growing as as mobile devices become better equipped to handle this type of search. We as search optimizers will need to present pages better suited and optimized for this search. Right now I see many people using standard type in search and browsing the clients normal website which is simply not user friendly for mobile device browsers. Simply getting more websites to present a mobile version of their website is a biggest hurdle for all of us to climb.
