Twitter…Next Must Have Marketing Space?

twitter
Only if we talk/blog/IM about it enough!

Twitter is a ‘micro-blogging’ service that allows users to send ‘updates’ via the Twitter website, SMS, instant messaging, email, or a separate application. Founded by a Obvious Corp. (um, not so much), many are still trying to determine it’s ultimate use.

I have heard Twitter described as many things; the next myspace, social without the network and the next big thing in online advertising. Being an amateur user myself, I’ve found that it can be a little bit of it all and then some.

There are positives and negatives. The most obvious are it’s social aspects ie it’s a great way to keep up with busy friends, family and colleagues. On the downside, I don’t need to know what they are all having for lunch every afternoon. In fact, never mind knowing what they are having for lunch, knowing what strangers are having for lunch is also not improving my quality of life.

But then, I am only one person…. and there is obviously a following who may disagree with me. Twitter, like most social networking websites, can be a great avenue for personal branding, profiles are the next business card! If you are interested in promoting yourself, hop on.

However, if you are interested in promoting your products and services? Be wary. Twitter is part of an exclusive club of social networking sites that are crawling with ‘Net’ savvy users. Just as readers of your SEM Blog won’t generate that fat Adsense check for you, Twitter users will see right through your Twitter profile if it is there for anything else other than to send updates on your meals….

Social networking? Yes. Next Must Have Marketing Space? Not so much…

  1. Cool post. I think one thing to add about twitter is that if you do have enough friends its almost like shouting on top of a mountain top saying HEYYYYY I HAVE A NEW PRODUCT. or HEY I HAVE A NEW POST.

Thanks Jeff dempsey for that analogy.
